If you know me, you know I take my gardening pretty seriously. As the leaves change and our Wisconsin nights get chillier, my green thumb doesn’t hibernate for the season. It just moves indoors!
Let’s talk about why I love having plants inside, along with some of my personal favorites that have thrived in my own home.
Why Indoor Plants Are Good For You
Fall and winter are actually the perfect time to focus on houseplants. They fill the void left by the outdoor garden, add a little life to shorter days, and honestly, they just make a house feel like home.
Beyond looking pretty on a windowsill, houseplants can also support your health. NASA’s famous Clean Air Study found that certain plants help filter common household toxins from the air we breathe, which is great when it’s too cold outside to open the windows and let fresh air in!
Other research shows that simply being around greenery can boost your mood and lower stress levels. And who doesn’t need a little help in that department this time of year?!
There’s also something to be said for the little dose of nature that comes from caring for a plant. Watching something grow, bloom, or even just stay alive under your care brings a small sense of accomplishment to your day.
My Favorite Indoor Plants
As I said, I take my gardening pretty seriously. Over the years, I’ve built up a nice little indoor garden in my home. If you were to ask me my favorite indoor plants, here’s what I would say.
Easy-Care Classics
If you’re newer to plant parenthood (or just don’t have a green thumb!), start here. The Snake Plant and Pothos are nearly impossible to kill. They’ll keep thriving even if you forget to water them for a week!
Spider Plants are another low-maintenance option, and the Money Tree is said to bring good luck. Isn’t that perfect for a housewarming present or another fresh start?
Statement Plants
If you want more drama, the Monstera and Bird of Paradise are gorgeous additions that make a big visual impact. Their large, striking leaves instantly elevate a room and give it that “featured in a magazine” feel.
Blooms & Specialty Plants
They’re a little harder to care for, but orchids add a little extra color and personality to any room. I love mine and have actually been able to keep mine coming back a few times a year. It feels like a treat every time!
The Christmas Cactus is another festive favorite that blooms right around the holidays. It’s a beautiful seasonal addition when our Wisconsin winters start to feel a little too cold.
I also love my aloe plant, which doubles as a practical remedy for minor burns, and my orange tree brings a little bright, citrusy joy to my kitchen.
Bring a Little Life to Your Home This Season
As you can see, I’m a big fan of houseplants – and for good reason! A few indoor plants can really make all the difference when you’re looking for an easy and natural way to freshen up your space before the wind chill (and the snow!) start to fall here in Wisconsin.
And remember, if you’re thinking about making a move this fall or winter, I’d love to help you bring your dreams home. Reach out anytime and let’s talk about starting your new chapter!
