What Is Your Ideal Decorating Style? Let’s Find Out

One of my favorite parts of my job is getting the opportunity to walk through countless homes, admiring how the current owners have brought their own unique personalities and design style to the space. Sometimes, my clients and I will chat about what they love and what they would change, and it’s always interesting to see how two people can look at the same space and come up with completely different ideas of how to decorate it.

Popular Home Decorating Styles

Finding your perfect decorating style isn’t just about following trends. It’s about creating a space that feels authentically you. Whether you’re settling into a cozy Brookfield colonial or a spacious Lake Geneva retreat, your home should tell your story and your decor is the perfect way to do that.

Before deciding where you should hang that picture or what type of lighting you want to install, let’s talk about some of the most popular home decorating styles I’ve seen.

Maximalist

Maximalist interior design is the most extravagant and bold design style! This exuberant style incorporates layers upon layers of vibrant colors, patterns, textures, and meaningful items, taking your personal preferences and favorite pieces of art, furniture, treasures, and decor and dials it up to ten by having it all on display, hopefully in a somewhat coordinated fashion. This makes each maximalist-styled home incredibly unique to the person designing it! The trick to mastering maximalism is to find your happy medium with a little focus and planning, so it’s elaborate yet not too overwhelming for the senses.

Hygge

Pronounced “hoo-ga,” this Danish concept embraces ultimate coziness and contentment. Think soft, chunky knit blankets, natural wood elements, and warm lighting from candles or string lights. Hygge homes feature neutral color palettes, natural textures, and an overall sense of warmth and comfort – perfect for our Wisconsin winters when you want to cuddle up and escape the snow outside.

Boho

Free-spirited and eclectic, Bohemian style combines global influences, vibrant colors, and a casual, collected feel. Characterized by layered textiles, macramé hangings, abundant plants, and mixed patterns, Boho spaces feel relaxed yet visually interesting. This style works beautifully in older Milwaukee homes or spaces with character and architectural details.

Mid Century Modern

Clean lines, organic forms, and functionality define this timeless style from the 1950s and 60s. With its tapered furniture legs, geometric patterns, and integration of both natural and manufactured materials, Mid Century Modern creates an uncluttered, sophisticated vibe that fits perfectly in many Madison area homes and downtown Milwaukee lofts.

Traditional

Comfortable, classic, and familiar, Traditional style features symmetrical arrangements, refined furniture, and timeless décor elements. Rich wood tones, elegant patterns, and architectural details create spaces that feel established and welcoming, ideal for historic homes throughout our region.

Contemporary

Not to be confused with “modern,” Contemporary style reflects what’s current right now. Today, that means clean lines, intentional negative space, and a neutral palette with strategic pops of color. This adaptable style works beautifully in new construction homes throughout Waukesha County and urban Milwaukee neighborhoods.

Minimalist

“Less is more” defines Minimalist spaces, which feature clean lines, monochromatic color schemes, and clutter-free surfaces. Every item serves a purpose, creating calm, functional spaces. This style translates beautifully to smaller homes or apartments, but can create stunning statements in larger homes when executed thoughtfully.

Finding Your Ideal Style

Not sure which style speaks to you? Here are some ways to discover your decorating personality:

  • Create a Pinterest board without overthinking it. Pin whatever catches your eye, then look for patterns in what you’ve collected. You might discover you’re drawn to certain colors or elements that cross multiple styles.
  • Visit furniture galleries and design centers in Milwaukee, Racine, or Madison to see different styles in person. Take photos of displays that resonate with you.
  • Consider your lifestyle. Do you have young children? Pets? Do you entertain frequently? Your practical needs should influence your decorating decisions.
  • Look at your closet. Your fashion preferences often align with your design aesthetic. If you wear bohemian clothing, you might love boho home décor too.

Remember, most homes blend multiple styles. Don’t be afraid to create a personalized mix that reflects your unique taste and the character of your Southeast Wisconsin home.
